Apple Software Updates

What

Managing Software Updates on any devices is an everyday IT requirement and traditionally Apple did have more than one mechanism depending upon the device type; the process has become simplified though.

When/Why

With the introduction of Big Sur, Apple unified Software Updates across all device types and introduced MDM Software Updates for all devices

How

For i(Pad)OS, tvOS and macOS (Big Sur+), devices must be both MDM enrolled and Supervised to manage Software Updates. The method is akin to VPP Apps installations; an MDM command is sent to the device informing it which update(s) it should instal.

Devices running macOS versions older than Big Sur, may still use the legacy method or may be configured to benefit from MDM Software Updates through FileWave.
